First-year Leader

March 2016-Present

As a Madison Engineering Leader, I have had the opportunity to grow as a leader and as a person. Through this program, I have learned variations of leadership styles and have put those theories into practice as a leader for a first-year engineering class at James Madison University. As a first-year leader, I facilitate a group of 10 freshmen engineers with my fellow leader. We guide them through the Human Centered Design process as they work on small design challenges. This program has encouraged me to become an everyday leader beyond just the classroom.

I am currently in my second year in the leadership program. I have the opportunity to learn from my mistakes and successes from my first year in the program, as well as continually grow as a leader.

The Engineering Ambassadors Network (EAN) is a collaboration of engineering students across universities that are dedicated to changing the conversation middle and high school students are having about engineering. As one of the six founding members of EAN at James Madison University, it was our responsibility to continue the this conversation to our local community. During my time as an Engineering Ambassadors, I have given numerous tours to perspective students and showcased the Madison Engineering Program. I engaged in the application and interview process to seek out new ambassadors for the JMU chapter. Below you can find the presentation I made and presented with my fellow peer about 3D Printing Prosthetics at the 2015 Engineering Ambassadors Network Conference at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Re:MADE Camp
Re:MADE Camp Counselor

August 20-22, 2017

This was the first year of Re:MADE Camp! It gave first year engineers the opportunity to build their new peer community, make professional connections with upper level engineering students, faculty, staff, and administration.

My job as a Re:MADE camp counselor was to help foster growth in the first years, guide them through small engineering design challenges, provide an inclusive environment for all those who attended, and help the first years explore personal and professional interests by sharing with them my own experiences.
